No. 4 Ground Truth
Dahmakan raised US$28 million. Then it opened a shop.
Dahmakan started in 2015 and, in 2017, became the first Malaysian startup accepted into Y Combinator. It developed its own recipes, cooked in its own cloud kitchens and delivered the meals itself. By 2020 it had raised about US$28 million, including a round of US$18 million in February 2020 with Rakuten Capital and Woowa Brothers among the investors.
In November 2020 it became Pop Meals. Its team said the old brand "didn't capture everything that the product now has to offer: more affordable, more exciting and popular foods". They said a rebrand had been on their minds since 2019, when they saw "how excited our customer base was with the new direction" of the menu. The company also launched its first offline store, with dine-in and takeaway, in Cyberjaya.
By March 2023, Pop Meals had more than 35 venues. By July 2026 it had 87 outlets across the Klang Valley, Melaka and Johor, and said it was on track for 100 by the end of the year.
As we read it, the company followed what its customers responded to, then changed the name and added shops to match.
Look at which of your products or services customers choose most, even when it is not the one you set out to sell. That points to which part of your business to build on.
