No. 1 Ground Truth
Two shops, same street, same costs, different year-end.
Malaysian small and medium businesses were worth RM652.4 billion in 2024: 39.5% of GDP, and more than 96% of all the businesses in the country. In F&B, estimates of early closure vary. The Malaysian Food and Beverage Executives Association's deputy president puts it at 30–35% of new ventures within 12 to 18 months. MenuBase estimates about 60% in year one.
The usual response to numbers like these is to reach for the pattern: undercapitalised, too much competition, rent too high, owners with no financial training. Each is true somewhere. Together they still do not explain why two shops on the same street, with the same costs and the same foot traffic, end the year in different places.
That gap is where we work. The closure figures describe what happened. What caused it is nearly always a decision someone made about people: what the customer wanted, what the team could sustain past the opening month, or how the founder responded when the first plan met reality.
Ground Truth is a short series. Each post takes one real Malaysian business, the line everyone repeats about it, and the decision underneath that the line leaves out.
Nobody has ever interviewed a bell curve.
